Henry Matisse: Henri Émile Benoît Matisse was a French painter who was famed for his use of colour as well as his fluid and unique draughtsmanship. He was a painter, draughtsman, printer, and sculptor, but is most known for his paintings. Matisse, along with Pablo Picasso, is widely considered as one of the artists who best defined the revolutionary movements in the visual arts during the first decades of the twentieth century, responsible for substantial advances in painting and sculpture. Many of his best works were from the decade following 1906, when he developed a strict style based on flattened forms and ornate pattern. His command of the expressive language of colour and drawing, which he demonstrated in a body of work spanning more than half a century, earned him recognition as a major figure in modern art.
